While every other company is Girls in the Night Trafficcoming up with ways to deliver VR content, Netflix is looking even further into the future with an imagined device that lets you binge watch from your very eyeballs.
SEE ALSO: Netflix targets ad block users with intentionally creepy 'Black Mirror' promosIn a short video clip (below) designed to promote the latest season of Black Mirroron Netflix, the company came up with a concept device called Netflix Vista, which would let you constantly watch television anywhere, with a simple blink of your eye.
Longtime fans of Black Mirrorwill immediately recognize the imaginary device as a take on the concept eye-based display featured in the series' episode "The Entire History of You." But in this case, instead of replaying videos of your own life, your favorite Netflix shows would be accessible to your eyes whether in the gym, commuting on the train or, sadly, having dinner with your partner.
Using the tagline "What if the things you love could always be with you?" the Netflix video is a clever tie-in to the popular sci-fi series, but it's also a dark and inadvertent reminder to stopbinge watching.
And as much as some might think Netflix Vista is fantastical, the fact is that major tech companies are indeed working on developing such a device. Back in April, it was revealed that Samsung had filed a patent for smart contact lenses with a built-in camera. Similarly, both Google and Sony have filed patents on smart contact lens technology.
There's no word on when these devices will be offered commercially, but if the concept device shown in the Netflix video looks unrealistic today, rest assured, it's likely just a few years away from becoming a reality.
Of course, the company is hoping you just take Netflix Vista as the sci-fi fun it's intended to be, and not as a stark reminder to unplug from the internet's most popular binge machine next to YouTube.
