"The purpose of the film is to bring this incredibly intimate show to Bruce’s entire audience intact and complete," Springsteen's manager, Jon Landau, said in a release. "In addition to its many other virtues, Netflix has provided for a simultaneous worldwide release which is particularly important for our massive international audience."
Springsteen on Broadwayis being produced by Thom Zimny, who has worked with Springsteen before. The same team producing the show is onboard for the Netflix special: Jon Landau, George Travis, and Barbara Carr.
The film adaptation will be identical to the Broadway show itself and should capture the feel of the Walter Kerr Theater. As an added bonus, the special will, of course, feature Springsteen with Patti Scialfa for two songs.
Springsteen on Broadwaybegan performances last October and was initially set to run for eight weeks but was extended three times. The show is a mixture of spoken word and song running a bit over two hours with no intermission. Like his epic E Street Band shows, tickets have been hard to come by with the whole run being completely sold out.
The show is career spanning in terms of the stories told and the songs performed. It has received rave reviews from critics -- plus Springsteen earned a special Tony Award for the show.
