All hail the new girl with the dragon tattoo.
Claire Foy – best known as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's The [EP05] Lovely Ladies DormitoryCrown– has officially been cast as lead Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider's Web, to be directed by Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe).
SEE ALSO: With 'Game of Thrones' out of the running, who'll rule the Emmys? She takes over for Rooney Mara, who portrayed the character in 2011's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Noomi Rapace played the role in the original, Swedish-language The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, released in 2009, as well as its two sequels.
All the films are based on the Millennium series of books created by Stieg Larsson. The author had originally planned for a ten-part saga, but died after completing the third book. David Lagencrantz took over as the new author starting with the fourth installment, The Girl in the Spider's Web.
When Mara first booked the lead in Dragon Tattoo, the idea was that she would remain in the role for its likely sequels, then assumed to be The Girl Who Played With Fireand The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest(books two and three in Larsson's series).
However, plans for a second film with Mara never quite came together, and in 2015, Sony decided to move on a Spider's Webadaptation. The search for a new star got underway not long after. The studio set its sights high, reportedly eyeing Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson at various points.
Foy is a rising star who'd been acting professionally for years before she broke out with The Crown. She's up for a lead actress drama at this year's Emmys, which take place Sunday, and was recently at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her new movie, Breathe. In a statement, Alvarez described Foy as "an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth."
Shooting on The Girl in the Spider's Webis slated to begin this winter in Berlin and Stockholm. Sony has the film lined up for an October 19, 2018 release.
